In Kadampa Buddhism, we have 3 spiritual programs: The General Program (GP), Foundation Program(FP) and the Teacher Training Program (TTP). These programs, designed by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism, are especially suited to the modern world. To learn more about these programs please use the tabs above.
All classes at KMC Southampton provide practical methods for improving our human nature and qualities through developing the capacity of our mind. The programs are open to everyone – young, old, working, retired, singles, couples, and families.
“Our present understanding and experience of Dharma (Buddhist meditation) is quite superficial. We are like someone who has entered a huge food store and seen many things but sampled only a few. We may have received many different teachings from many different teachers, but we have taken in very little, just a few morsels.
There is a gap between us and the Dharma. It feels as if the Dharma is there and we are here. Our mind is not mixed with Dharma and so we cannot apply it in our daily lives. As a result our ordinary everyday problems remain. We also find it difficult to integrate our spiritual path into our daily lives so we cannot use this Dharma to solve our daily problems. When we study Dharma our mind remains passive, like someone watching television. Therefore our life and our Dharma remain completely separate and unrelated.
Why is this? It is because we are not studying and practicing systematically according to a specially designed spiritual program. If we just dabble superficially in a spiritual path we will never gain a deep and stable experience, and our wisdom will never develop to its full potential. This is why the spiritual programs offered by the New Kadampa Tradition are so important.” – Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
General Program | Weekly Drop in Classes
See January-April Programme here
These are drop-in informal meditation classes followed by refreshments.
It provides a basic introduction to Buddhist teachings and meditations. Through these classes we can learn how to use Buddha’s advice in our daily lives to solve our problems and find the peace and happiness we seek.
These classes are suitable for everyone regardless of background or previous experience. Each class consists of guided meditation, instruction, and discussion followed by refreshments and lasts approximately an hour and a half.
Classes are self-contained so you can attend any you choose. However, you may receive more benefit from attending a whole course and thereby gain a full understanding of the subject.
A special time in the middle of your week to rest, reflect and improve your mind. Every week, you will learn different meditation practices, helping you to become a happier person through learning to apply Buddha’s practical teachings in your daily life. You are welcome to join our community for refreshments and discussion afterward.
Foundation Programme (FP) | Thursdays 7-9.30pm
Ongoing, weekly course on Buddhism and meditation. The course is suitable for anyone with serious interest in deepening their understanding of Buddhist meditation and wisdom.
The main benefits are:
· Deeper understanding of the meditations
· Structure to help establish a regular meditation practice
· More support for your spiritual growth
· An opportunity to discuss and ask questions
· Help and support from other practitioners
· Gain the ability to integrate Buddha’s teachings into our daily lives and solve all our human problems.
What to expect ~ In each class there are guided meditations, teachings on the book, and discussion in pairs. There are also discussion classes, where two students lead a group discussion. Periodically, there will be examinations to help deepen your knowledge of the book.
Like a college course there are some commitments, such as a little home-study each week, regular attendance and taking part in discussions.
When you join the Foundation Programme, you commit to studying one book. This can take differing lengths of time, depending on which book is being studied, and how far through we are.
This program affords an opportunity to gain authentic experience of Dharma without abandoning our modern lifestyle.
Warm friendships develop as students inspire each other, sharing insights and experiences of the spiritual path.
We will be studying Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s extraordinary book ‘The New 8 Steps to Happiness’. By studying this book you will discover how to cultivate a loving and compassionate heart by transforming daily difficulties into the spiritual path.

TTP is the perfect basis for transforming our minds and swiftly progressing on the spiritual path. With this deeper understanding and clarity we can become fully qualified as a teacher of the New Kadampa Tradition.
There is a class per week on Sundays 2-6pm – Each class includes preparatory practices, guided meditations, teachings, commentary, and discussion. We will be studying “How to understand the mind” from June 2016.
